Economy Wasted无谓的节省
An English tourist found himself in Norway with only enough in his pocket to pay his passage back.一个英国旅客在挪威时发现自己口袋里的钱仅够回家的路费了。
As he knew that it would take him only two days to get to England,他了解到英国仅需两天已经足够,
he decided that he could easily do without food.于是就决定不吃饭,熬熬就过去了。
So he went on board the steamer and bought a ticket.随后,他就上了轮船,买了一张票。
He closed his ears to the sound of the lunch bell.吃午饭的铃声响了,他堵住耳朵不听。
When dinner time came he refused the invitation to accompany a fellow traveller to the saloon,到晚饭时间,一个同船旅客请他一块去餐厅,他又拒绝了,
saying that he didn't feel well.说是不舒服。
The next morning he didn't go to breakfast第二天早上,他也没去吃早饭,
and at lunch time he again stayed in his cabin.午饭时仍然呆在船舱内。
At dinner time he was so hungry that he could not stand it any longer.到了开晚饭的时候,他饿极了,再也没办法忍受了。
"I'm going to eat," he said,“我要去吃饭,”他说,
"even if they throw me overboard afterwards."“就算吃完后他们把我扔下船。”
At dinner he ate everything the steward put in front of him晚饭时,他把酒保端来的饭吃了个精光,
and felt ready for the coming row.并筹备迎接即将来临的争吵。
"Bring me the bill," he said to the steward.“结账。”他对酒保说。
"The bill, sir?" said the man.“结账吗,先生?”酒保问。
"Yes," answered the traveler.“是的。”他说。
"There isn't any bill," was the answer,“不需要付账。”酒保说,
"on the ship meals are included in the passage money."“船上的伙食是包含在船费中的。”
